We actively support the national campaign to STOP puppymills and the sale of puppies and kittens in pet stores, as well as the local campaign here in Connecticut. We know EVERY community in the US will one day ban the sale of puppies and kittens in pet stores and stop seeing these innocent beings as products. We encourage everyone who loves animals to get involved and help put an end to this cruel industry. Speak up for the animals who cannot speak for themselves.
We oppose "declawing" - the inhumane procedure in which a cat's toes are cut off. The very term "declawing" is extremely misleading in itself - this procedure should be called what it really is - AMPUTATION. Scratching is a completely natural desire of the cat. Provide many scratch boxes and scratching posts, cat trees, toys, and attention and your cat will learn to scratch where appropriate rather than some where you disapprove. You should also trim your cats nails regularly, this can be done at home or at your vet. This "declawing" procedure has NO medical benefit to the cat, is an intensely painful surgery and leads to life-long phantom pain at every amputation point, and often leads to behavioral problems such as litter box avoidance and aggression. We know we will see a day when declawing is banned in the entire US as it is all over the world and in many cities in California. The Association of Veterinarians for
Animal Rights is clear on its position regarding declawing: “The cat is
treated as if he or she is an inanimate object who can be modified, even
to the point of surgical mutilation, to suit a person's perception of
what a cat should be. It would seem more ethical and humane to accept
that claws and scratching are inherent feline attributes, and to adjust
one's life accordingly if a cat is desired as a companion. If this is
unacceptable, then perhaps a different companion would be in order.” See the three videos below to learn more about the inhumane procedure of "declawing."
